UPSC Civil Services Exam — Basic Overview
UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) civil services exam 3 stages-ൽ ആണ്:
Prelims: 2 papers — General Studies (200 marks) + CSAT (200 marks). Objective type. Qualifying nature.
Mains: 9 papers. Essay, General Studies 1-4, Optional Subject (2 papers), Indian Language, English. Total 1750 marks.
Interview (Personality Test): 275 marks. Final selection ഇതിൽ ആണ്.
Total selection marks: Mains + Interview = 2025 marks. IAS കിട്ടാൻ generally 950+ marks ആണ് needed (changes yearly).
UPSC-ക്ക് Eligibility
Age: General — 21 to 32 years. OBC — 35 years. SC/ST — 37 years. Kerala-ൽ OBC candidates ഒരുപാടുണ്ട് — 35 years വരെ try ചെയ്യൂ.
Attempts: General — 6 attempts. OBC — 9 attempts. SC/ST — unlimited (age limit വരെ).
Qualification: Any graduation degree — any subject. Final year students ഉം Prelims-ൽ appear ചെയ്യൂ.
Important: Kerala-ൽ NIT, Government colleges-ൽ നിന്ന് ഒരുപാടുപേർ UPSC try ചെയ്യുന്നു. Engineering, Science, Arts — any background okay.
Preparation Strategy — Where to Start?
Step 1: NCERT Foundation Class 6 to 12 — History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science NCERT books. ഇവ completely read ചെയ്ത് notes ഉണ്ടാക്കൂ. UPSC questions-ന്റെ foundation ഇവിടെ ആണ്. 3-4 months invest ചെയ്ത് ഈ foundation solid ആക്കൂ.
Step 2: Standard Books History: Spectrum Modern History, Tamil Nadu History book. Geography: G.C. Leong, NCERT Atlas. Polity: Lakshmikanth (must read!). Economy: Ramesh Singh, Economic Survey. Environment: Shankar IAS book.
Step 3: Current Affairs Daily: The Hindu newspaper (must!). Monthly: Vision IAS current affairs, Insights IAS. Annual: India Year Book. Kerala specific: Mathrubhumi read ചെയ്ത് national level connect ചെയ്യൂ.
Optional Subject — Choose Carefully!
Mains-ൽ ഒരു optional subject choose ചെയ്യണം. 2 papers — 500 marks. Good optional = big advantage.
Keala students popular choices: Malayalam Literature: Kerala background ഉള്ളവർക്ക് advantage. Material available. Scoring subject. Geography: Popular choice. Good study material. Manageable syllabus. Public Administration: Short syllabus. GS overlap ഉണ്ട്. Good for beginners. History: Interest ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ. Scoring but lengthy.
Advice: Choose subject you have genuine interest in — 6 months+ ആ subject-ൽ spend ആകും.

Online Free Resources: Unacademy (free content), YouTube — Insights IAS, Vision IAS channels. BYJU’s IAS — some free content. ForumIAS — discussion, notes free.
Keala PSC Experience: Already PSC prepare ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ — UPSC-ക്ക് head start ഉണ്ട്. Kerala history, polity knowledge already ഉണ്ട്.
Realistic Timeline
1st year: NCERT + Standard books + Current affairs. 2nd year: Mains answer writing practice + Optional subject. 3rd year: Mock tests + Interview preparation.
Minimum 2-3 years dedicated preparation ആണ് needed. Part-time prepare ചെയ്ത് crack ചെയ്യുന്നവർ ഉണ്ട് — but full-time better.
Kerala-ൽ ഒരു practical advice: Family support ഉണ്ടാകണം. 2-3 years income ഇല്ലാതെ prepare ചെയ്യൽ financially challenging ആണ്. Plan ചെയ്ത് start ചെയ്യൂ.
